Starting your own business in Cambridge

As a business support service in Cambridge, PA Answer is dedicated to supporting businesses in any way we can. That’s why we’ve compiled a quick guide containing some of our key tips for starting your own business in the Cambridgeshire area, or further afield…

Make use of the support on offer – in Cambridge alone there is a long list of organisations designed to help you make a success of your business; organisations such as Business Link, Cambridge Network, Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, GOV.UK and more are there to help provide you with the right advice and guidance, or point you in the right direction of those who can, so be sure to make as much use of this support as possible.

  • Create a business plan with clear steps and work from it. Starting a business is hard work which will consume your time and energy – a plan will help you waste less of both and get closer to reaching the goals you strive to achieve.
  • Speculate to accumulate – it is tempting to be as thrifty as possible at all times, especially when money is tight, and this is generally good advice. However it is important to understand and identify where an outlay of your budget could provide a significant return for your business – and not be afraid to take advantage of these situations.
  • Build your reputation – Your reputation is your biggest asset, especially as a small business owner. When you are selling yourself, you can be talking as the CEO, Director, Salesperson, Receptionist, Secretary and Delivery person – people will choose whether or not to do business with you personally, capitalise on that trust by always delivering and even over-delivering if possible.
  • Maximise your opportunities – Networking doesn’t only take place at networking events! Talk to people, listen to people, build relationships and talk positively about your business, wherever you are – then make sure you maximise every enquiry, that’s where PA Answer come in
  • Get yourself a mentor – There is an array of places to find a mentor for your business, including many options online, but the best place to look is within your own networks. Find a business person you admire and respect, and ask them – you might be surprised how often they’ll say yes.
